Component Name: Input Fields
Types: Input, Password

Component Name: Text Input Field

Description

The text field is a component that allows the editing of a single line of text. A typical example occurs in a file save dialogue where the user can enter the name of the file. It is the text field that accepts their typing. Editing is allowed.

Below is a "Username and Password" Dialog Box which shows both an Input Field and a Password Field. The function is the same, but the visual display differes because a Password field contains confidentail information and therefore the characters are represented by an "*" (adterisk).

Sound Rationale

The sound of a pencil scribbling across thick soft paper bridges the philosophy between traditional writing and computer based output! It is a metaphoric sound linking a real-world activity to the technology based counterpart.

Component Name: Password Field

Description

This is simply a Text Field with character echo options available. This view indicates that something was typed, but does not display the actual text.

See the illustration above in the Input Field description for a sample Password Field.

Sound Rationale

As mentioned in the Input Field sound rationale, no one wants anyone to know their passord as they are entering it. The sound of a keyboard being pressed is heard as one enters a character. this sound was chosen for two reasons. First, it compliments the scribble sound for the Input Field, again "bridging" the traditioanl with the technological. The second reason for choosing this sound is that of privacy. Because it is not one "tone" for one character, if a person is typing in a password at a moderate speed, no one would be able to tell how many characters are in the password by listening to the sound.
